The impact of negative body image on turnover intention: the mediating and amplifying role of perceived discrimination
Research overview
Retention challenges can involve experiences that conventional HR measures overlook. Drawing on data from 860 full-time US employees, this study examines how negative body image relates to intentions to leave an employer. Negative body image was associated with stronger turnover intentions, both directly and indirectly through perceived workplace discrimination. The findings connect an often-personal concern with organizational experiences of fairness and belonging. For leaders and HR professionals, the study highlights the relevance of addressing appearance-related stigma and creating respectful workplaces. Its survey design establishes associations, while further research is needed to test causality and the effectiveness of interventions.
