A systematic review and synthesis of empirical research on ‘knowledge leadership’: A new insight in knowledge management literature
Research overview
How can leaders turn an organization’s knowledge into shared learning and practical value? Synthesizing 149 studies published between 2001 and 2021, this review examines the leadership approaches that support knowledge creation, sharing, and application. It highlights transformational, distributed, empowering, and visionary leadership, alongside the importance of relationships, learning networks, and collaboration. The study develops an integrated view of knowledge leadership that connects strategic direction with the everyday work of coaching, communicating, and enabling others. For organizational leaders, it offers a foundation for building environments where expertise circulates, employees learn together, and knowledge supports innovation and organizational goals.
