Body image in the Workplace: Assessing the Impact on Self-Esteem and Employee Engagement
Research overview
Employees bring their perceptions of themselves to work—including how they feel about their bodies. This study of 860 US employees examines an often-overlooked connection between body image and workplace vigor: the energy and persistence employees invest in their work. Positive body image was associated with greater vigor, while negative body image was associated with lower vigor; self-esteem partially explained both relationships. The research broadens the conversation about employee well-being and engagement, pointing to the relevance of respectful, inclusive workplaces that avoid appearance-based judgments. These survey findings identify relationships rather than establish causation.
