The effect of physical structure on working and personal behavior: an investigative case study at an educational institution
Research overview
A modern building does not automatically create a better workplace. This study examines the experiences of 84 faculty members, administrators, and graduate assistants following a move into a new university business school building in Lebanon. More favorable assessments of the physical environment were associated with more positive perceptions of working conditions and personal experiences, including motivation, commitment, and belonging. However, the building alone explained only part of these differences. The study highlights the importance of involving users in workplace design and treating investment in physical space as one component of a broader approach to employee experience and organizational effectiveness.
