The Role of Motivation, Ability, and Opportunity in Achieving Effective Knowledge-Work: Knowledge Work and MAO
Research overview
Effective knowledge management depends on people’s willingness and capacity to contribute, alongside the opportunities their organizations provide. Drawing on survey responses from 350 university employees, this study examines how motivation, ability, and opportunity relate to knowledge-work behavior. All three were significant contributors, with motivation showing the strongest relationship and intrinsic motivation outweighing external incentives. Employees reporting high levels across all three dimensions demonstrated the greatest knowledge-work activity. The findings offer HR professionals and leaders a practical foundation for aligning development, motivation, and working conditions to support knowledge creation, sharing, and application.
